The Wife

London, 18th October 2016 – principal photography on The Wife, which stars six-time Academy Award® nominee Glenn Close (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol I & II, Damages, Albert Nobbs, Dangerous Liaisons, Fatal Attraction), begins on 31st October 2016.

Glenn Close is joined by co-star Jonathan Pryce (Taboo, Wolf Hall, Game of Thrones, Pirates of the Caribbean), Christian Slater (Mr. Robot,Nymphomaniac: Vol I & II, True Romance), Annie Starke (Bastards, Albert Nobbs), Max Irons (Woman in Gold, Terminal) and Harry Lloyd (Anthropoid, The Theory of Everything, The Iron Lady).

The Wife is produced by Piers Tempest, Jo Bamford, Rosalie Swedlin, Meta Louise Folder, Claudia Bluemhuber and Piodor Gustaffson. London-based Embankment Films has secured multiple pre-sales throughout international territories and brokered the financing for the film, provided by Silver Reel, Creative Scotland, Film Väst, Chimney, the Swedish Film Institute and Svensk Filmindustri.

Embankment’s Tim Haslam comments, “The Wife celebrates a woman who takes back the power that she should rightfully possess – in a thought-provoking, witty, dignified and graceful manner; and with a ‘twist’ ending that you really don’t see coming. The Wife is for a cinema audience stimulated by powerful, intimate and award-winning performance at the highest level.”

Swedish director Björn Runge (De Blaue Engel, Daybreak), winner of Berlin’s Silver Bear and two Swedish Academy Awards, directs from a screenplay by award-winning screenwriter Jane Anderson (Olive Kitteridge, The Prize Winner of Defiance, Ohio), adapted from Meg Wolitzer’s 2003 novel.

Runge adds: “Glenn’s an actress that we all greatly admire, an icon who has for years captivated audiences with her grace and incisive performances. In The Wife she’s the emotional axis for many women of every generation, and we will celebrate her character’s self-determination, humour and strength.  We’re thrilled to partner Glenn with such a strong counterpoint in Jonathan, and support them with a vibrant young cast.”

Of her casting as the eponymous Joan, Close comments, “I have never played a character like Joan Castleman and am thrilled by the prospect of bringing her to life. I have huge admiration for Jonathan Pryce’s sublime talent and am honoured to be partnering with him in The Wife. The story is arresting and the characters are artists of the highest order—complex, passionate, flawed and movingly human. I adore Jane Anderson’s writing and look forward to being guided by Björn Runge.”

Principal photography commences on 31st October 2016 on location across Scotland and Stockholm, for seven weeks.

Embankment are selling international rights and CAA / WME  co-represent the U.S.
